Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tokka and Rahzar

Secret of the Ooze may not be my favorite Ninja Turtle story, but I have such a soft spot for the crazy Henson style goodness of Tokka and Rahzar. I love the movie figures and I’m glad I can now add animated versions to that collection. Let’s take a look!

You know the NECA ‘toon style boxes by now, and if you don’t what are you doing reading this? At any rate, I do really like the Illustrations of these two on the front, you don’t see these characters, especially these versions on much stuff, so it’s nice to see.

The babies come with two sets of hands (grip and claw), four food items and a mutant control device. The food is there because their plot revolves around food in the episode. They terrorize a mall due to hunger and are later lured into a trap with food. I guess mutants burn a lot of calories.

The food has that perfectly cartoony style and the figures can hold them in their grip hands well.

The purple device is from the Dirk Savage: Mutant Hunter episode like Tokka and Rahzar. It’s used by the villain to control mutants (or humans) who wear the control bands. It also has some great toon detail and solid paint work.

The designs for these characters fluctuates somewhat from scene to scene, but I think they did a wonderful job capturing the essence of the characters. Tokka especially has a piercing expression that for some reason makes me think of Danny DeVito’s Penguin from Batman Returns or a Skeksis from the Dark Crystal. I also like that Rahzar has some fur detail sculpted in. It gives him a much more polished feel.

The articulation is the standard articulation for this line with:

  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, hips, wrists, and ankles
  • Double hinged knees and elbows
  • Swivel biceps and thighs
  • Hinged jaws
  • Ball jointed head and waist

The ball jointed heads on both figures allow for some really expressive tilt movement and good up and down movement as well. The ball and socket on Rahzar’s torso gets great crunch and tilt, but Tokka’s is tough to get moving in-between that shell. Tokka also has somewhat limited knee movement due to the thickness of his leg. I love the extra expressiveness that comes from the articulated jaws.

The paint on these two is fantastic. I can’t praise the matte finishes enough and the black line detail is so crisp and pretty, extending even to the insides of the mouth!

Overall these guys are a joy. They are so beautiful and look fantastic fighting the Turtles. I know they appeared on the show, but these two characters I associate with the films and it is also really fun to have movie characters in animated style. It makes me fantasize about adding other movie characters in an animated style, like Samurai Turtles or an animated Tatsu. They also make me want a Dirk Savage figure badly!

NECA’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon 7″ Tokka & Rahzar two-pack will be available for sale as part of Haulathon, a four-week-long collector’s event hosted by NECA and Target.
